Jewish Day School Programs
Gateways provides on-site special education support and services to students with a range of learning needs in 11 Boston-area Jewish day schools. Gateways employs a team of skilled speech/language therapists, occupational therapists and learning specialists to integrate personalized services within each day school. Children in participating schools receive direct services individually and/or in small groups, both in and out of classroom, to enhance their academic success and support their social, physical and behavioral development.
Our philosophy in the Day School Programs is to work with students, teachers and each school's special education staff to help students generalize developmental, academic and social skills and strategies to the classroom. We do this through individual and small groups both in and out of the classroom, co-teaching/team teaching, and replacement classes. Social skills are also addressed with students in a variety of ways: during group activities, at recess, in social skills groups and in the classroom. Therapists meet with teachers to share ideas and develop plans for the student. In addition, the therapists assist teachers with curriculum modifications and provide teachers with professional development including weekly coaching.
Delivering special education services in day schools goes well beyond dealing with students with learning challenges. It’s about providing the best practices for all students, supporting student learning with a team of professionals and giving teachers the tools to deal with a wide range of learners. It’s also about preserving a child’s self-esteem while we’re working together on creating the program that’s right for him or her. Last but not least, it’s about raising other children’s awareness that the student next to them may look or sound or learn differently. And that’s OK.
