As a person born with a disability and parent of a child with a disability, Tamar is keenly aware of the ongoing need for advocacy and accessibility for disability inclusion and education for children and families in the global Jewish community. In August 2020, Tamar became CEO of Gateways: Access to Jewish Education, after having served as the Chief Development Officer for the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Boston. Before that, Tamar had worked for over a decade at Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America and Hadassah International, most recently as Hadassah’s National Director of Annual Giving. Tamar is an active volunteer in the Greater Boston Jewish community, having previously served as a member of Gateways’ Board of Trustees and as Board Chair of Young Israel of Brookline. When she lived in Manhattan, Tamar was a Vice President of Congregation Ohab Zedek, a member of JNFuture’s Leadership Ring, and co-founded ViZion, a growing network of professionals working for Jewish, Israel and Zionist-related non-profits (now managed by the American Zionist Movement). Tamar has a Bachelor of Science in marketing from Yeshiva University’s Syms School of Business. A proud stepmother and mother to five children, Tamar lives with her husband, Allan Galper, in Brookline, MA.

Deirdre Munley

Deirdre has worked in the non-profit field for over a decade, as a Director, Board member, and consultant. She has a passion for assisting growing organizations in developing the systems, structures, data, and strategic vision that allow them to further their impact. Prior to joining Gateways in 2012, Deirdre served as Program Director and then Director of Operations for a children’s health foundation, as well as serving as a consultant to a variety of non-profits on organizational development and strategy. She has held an array of leadership positions on non-profit Boards, focusing on strategic planning and the establishment of best practices. She holds a Masters of Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Management, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with a concentration in Race and Ethnic Relations, both from Clark University.

Tali Cohen Carrus

Tali is passionate about inclusive Jewish Education and has worked with youth with and without disabilities in a variety of contexts including schools, synagogues, and summer camps. She has worked extensively as a disability inclusion consultant, partnering with Jewish organizations to improve their capacity to support and meaningfully include all members of the community. Tali holds an M.S.Ed in General and Special Education from Bank Street Graduate School and is a certified DIR/Floortime play therapist. In addition, she received a certificate in Advanced Jewish Studies/Day School Education from the Pardes Center for Jewish Educators and is an alumna of the Wexner Graduate Fellowship/Davidson Scholarship.

Sharon Goldstein

Sharon has worked with children and families for more than 15 years. She previously worked as the director of early childhood services at The Home for Little Wanderers in Boston, where she managed programs in early intervention, therapeutic childcare, and the development of an early childhood system of care. She has experience working with children (through age 21) and their families, teachers, special education providers and schools, as well as acting as a liaison, regarding case coordination and the IEP process. Sharon received Bachelor degrees in Psychology and Hebrew and Semitic Studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She holds Masters in Social Work from Columbia University School of Social Work and in Jewish Studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary. She is a licensed clinical social worker.

Noah Horowitz’s professional life has been as a database manager and business systems analyst. He is happiest when he helps organizations turn gathered data into useful information. Over the years, this personal mission has supported small and large corporations as an employee, and Jewish organizations (synagogues, summer camps and the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs) as a volunteer. He graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Accounting and International Business and used his auditing skills to launch his career.

Mia Hyman

Mia Hyman is involved in many aspects of Gateways’ programming, providing services to Jewish Day Schools, synagogues, Jewish preschools and Gateways’ own Jewish Education Programs. Mia has many years of experience working with students with behavioral disorders, Autism and other Developmental Disabilities in many different settings. She has taught Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) classes at the college level, provides professional development to both adults and teens, and has had an article published in the Journal of Positive Behavior Intervention focusing on the strategies implemented for a young man with Autism to successfully experience becoming a Bar Mitzvah. She graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Masters in Special Education with a concentration in Autism and Developmental Disabilities.

Elianna Mentzer is a graduate of Skidmore College, where she earned her B.A. in International Affairs. At Skidmore, she cultivated a love of writing, minoring in English literature and working as the Head Tutor of the Skidmore College Writing Center, where she tutored undergraduate students from every academic department. Herself a former Gateways teen volunteer, Elianna is enthusiastic about Jewish education and community engagement. She loves working with kids and young people, and has held positions at Temple Israel Hebrew School, MetroWest Jewish Day School, and Camp Yavneh.

Michal Pullman

Michal joined Gateways after working for 10 years as the medical biller for a physical therapy company. She started at Gateways working part time in the Sunday program and is now working as the Student Services Financial Administrator. Michal graduated New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) in Concord, NH as a certified professional medical coder.

Rebecca Redner

Rebecca began her career in special education as a high school volunteer at Gateways: Access to Jewish Education in 2003. After graduating from Boston University with a degree in Special Education in 2008, Rebecca returned to Gateways as a teacher. In addition to teaching in the Gateways Jewish Education Program, Rebecca has created the many resources available on the Gateways website, https://jgateways.org, and is the author of The Gateways Haggadah.

Jo comes to Gateways with experience in customer service and administration, having worked as an administrator for several different colleges and religious schools, including as the Office Assistant at URJ Camp Eisner. They also served as a queer and disability educator and have a BFA in creative writing from Wheaton College. In their free time, they enjoy cross-stitching, Israeli dance, and reading fantasy novels.

Rachel Sommer joined Gateways’ business office in 2008, and her position has evolved and grown right along with Gateways. She has worked in IT and administrative support for over 20 years, working at computer software start-ups including Transparent Language and Dragon Systems; large companies such as DMB&B, Marsh McLennan, and Lucent; and the Brain Tumor Society. Her first love, however, is working to support education, and her most beloved job before Gateways was as administrative and IT support at Boston University Academy. Rachel graduated from Brandeis University with honors in 1991. Rachel, her husband, and their two children all have neurodiverse challenges and have been grateful for the formal (through the Gateways Jewish Education Programs) and informal support of the Gateways community.

Leslie Zide, former Executive Director of Camp Kingswood and member of the Leadership team of Camp Grossman, brings with her a wealth of experience working with staff of all ages. She joins Gateways’ HR team to focus on the many tasks at hand in updating policies and procedures as the organization moves forward. Leslie is a graduate of UMASS Amherst with a BA in Economics. She lives in Ashland with her husband Lloyd, where she is a member of the Board of Directors of her community. She looks forward to working with her colleagues and promoting the mission of Gateways.

Eliana Bazer is so excited to be working at Gateways as a Mitzvah Menches teacher! From 2015-2018, she was a teen volunteer at Gateways and she absolutely loved it. She feels so fortunate to be able to return to the program. She recently graduated from the University of Rochester and is looking forward to a career working with children with disabilities. She has attended Camp Ramah in New England for many years and, in the summer of 2022, she worked as the Rosh Edah (unit head) for the Tikvah Program, where she worked with teens and young adults with disabilities.

Tara Campbell joined the Gateways team in March of 2022 and has since worked with students at Maimonides, Torah Academy, and Gann Academy. Tara has a Master’s degree in Special Education from The University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorder from Queens College. She is a certified Special Education teacher, a Speech Therapy Assistant, and a reading teacher with over 20 years of small group and classroom teaching experience at all levels. Tara began her career as a speech therapy assistant. While working with kids with language impairments in various public schools, she pursued her degree in special education at night. Tara discovered a passion for advocacy working with children with disabilities and learning challenges. Tasked with supporting a wide variety of ability levels in inclusive programs in public schools as well as a substantially separate private school program, Tara understands the foundations of education and empowerment that are necessary for educational teams to work collaboratively.

Marla Colarusso, M. Ed., is a retired Special Education Director with over 40 years in the classroom and in leadership positions. As a special education classroom teacher, she was instrumental in creating, in partnership with a general education colleague, the first Inclusion Program in Holliston, MA. Marla received her Bachelor of Education from Boston University and a Master of Education from Lesley College. Throughout her career, Marla championed the rights of all students, and was fortunate to be able to create specific programming for students with IEP’s within public school settings. Following her retirement, Marla has worked as an Inclusive Practices Ambassador for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and as a Student Teacher Supervisor through Simmons College, piloting the DESE Candidate Assessment of Performance system. Marla has also taught professional development workshops through Bi-County Collaborative, specifically around teacher evaluation, and Inclusive Practices. She also volunteers as a Special Education Surrogate Parent. Currently, as consultant for Gateways: Access to Jewish Education, Marla has worked with MWJDS and SSDS, to provide best practice expectations for classroom inclusive practices, administrator support, and mentoring within the Slifka Grant.

Marlene Moskowitz Dodyk is an experienced special educator and administrator, with more than 40 years of professional involvement in the fi eld. An ardent believer in inclusion for all students, she has integrated this philosophy in fulfilling teaching, administrative and supervisory responsibilities as the Early Childhood Coordinator/Out of District Coordinator and subsequent Director of Student Services for 39 years within the Wayland Public Schools. Currently, Marlene continues to share her expertise consulting with local school districts on special education program evaluation and development. Marlene holds a Master’s degree in Special Education from Boston University and a Doctorate in School Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction and Administration from Boston College.

Naomi Dreyer is our lead teacher for our TAGG (Torah, Avodah, G’milut Chasadim at Gateways) program and coteaches the Mitzvah Mensches Learning Lab class. A former Prozdor student, Naomi has her Master’s degree in Special Education from Wheelock and has been working as a special education teacher for the last eight years within Boston Public Schools.

Elana Fein has supported children, adolescents, young adults, and families in multiple settings including elementary schools, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization programs, and a community mental health center. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from William James College (formerly Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology) with a concentration in children, adolescents, and families. Elana is thrilled to be combining her passions for Jewish education, inclusion, and mental health access with the initiatives she is engaged with at Gateways.

Miriam Fein, Learning Specialist
Miriam Fein holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Russian Language and Literature and a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is a speech-language pathologist and licensed reading specialist. She has worked collaboratively with teachers and other Gateways therapists and specialists to support students in Jewish Day Schools since 2014, providing direct services to students of all ages to address their needs with language and English literacy and to help them access the general curriculum. Through her extensive training in explicit, systematic, structured language approaches to teaching reading and her understanding of the interaction of oral and written language, she helps students grow as readers, writers, and communicators. She is committed to early identification and prevention of reading disabilities through the use of evidence-based Response To Intervention approaches. She is equally committed to helping older students understand themselves as learners and develop their skills and confidence. She is a strong advocate for research-informed educational practices and loves sharing her interest in language with her students.

Katie Frade has worked as a licensed Occupational Therapist for a little over a year now. She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Developmental Psychology and minors in Understanding Autism and Life Science from Wheelock College in 2018. She received her Master’s of Occupational Therapy degree from Regis College in 2021. Katie has worked with a variety of clients from preschool through older adults and enjoys figuring out what motivates a person to engage in everyday activities.

Amy Freedman has been a speech/language pathologist for 30 years. She attended The University of Michigan (Bachelor’s of Art) and received a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Boston University. Her work experience began in a rehabilitation hospital working with head-injured and young strong patients. She then moved to schools, working with students from preschool through high school age. Amy has worked for Gateways for the last 18 years. Amy is interested in the social as well as academic success of her students. She runs social skills groups and consults with teachers and parents. Amy has been trained in the Social Thinking curriculum developed by Michelle Garcia Winner, which helps teach individuals from preschoolers to adults how to navigate the social world.

Jennifer Friedberg attended McGill University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Through her psychology and linguistic courses, she became interested in language development and subsequently completed a Master of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Emerson College in Boston, MA. Prior to her tenure at Gateways, Jennifer worked as a speech-language pathologist and clinical supervisor at Learning Prep School in Newton, MA, a private school for children with complex learning needs. She grew up in Montreal, where she learned French and Hebrew in addition to her mother tongue, English. As a speech-language pathologist, Jennifer works directly with students to set and meet goals in articulation, language, social communication, executive functioning, and writing. She also consults with teachers and works collaboratively with education teams to ensure that all students are benefitting from relevant learning strategies to ensure their maximal academic and social success. She currently lives in Natick, MA with her husband and three children. She loves working for Gateways, where she can apply her love of supporting school age children’s academic and social-emotional needs in the context of Jewish education.

Ilene Greenwald has worked as an Occupational Therapist for over 25 years. She received her Bachelor’s Degree and Certificate of Advanced Professional Studies at Tufts University’s Boston School of Occupational Therapy. She has been with Gateways since its inception as the Jewish Special Education Collaborative (JSEC). Ilene has worked in a variety of sites from preschools through high schools and enjoys working collaboratively with teachers, specialists, and parents.

Hannah Hoffman received both her Bachelor’s degree and her Master of Occupational Therapy in an accelerated program at the University of New Hampshire. During her fieldworks she had experience with multiple pediatric populations. She also has worked in the home health and hospital setting specializing with individuals recovering from neurological-based deficits. She has an interest in research to further the field of OT using evidence-based practice with treatment approaches.

Miriam Krasnow is a Speech and Language Pathologist with a master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. Miriam has experience working with different populations and has worked at multiple locations in the US and abroad. She is passionate about providing children with the support they need so that they can reach their goals as efficiently as possible. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, reading novels, and eating licorice. She lives in Brighton, Massachusetts with her husband and two children.

Debbie Krasnow is an experienced special educator with 38 years of professional involvement in the field. As a passionate educator and one who believes that all children can learn, provided they are taught the skills that match their learning style, she also enjoys collaborating with other educators and sharing her expertise so that they can also support their students and help them become successful. Debbie holds a Master’s degree in Special Education from Boston University and is licensed to teach students in grades K-8.

Margery Maidman received Master of Art in Teaching (M.A.T.) from the University of Chicago and her Bachelor’s degree in English from Brown University. She is an English teacher and reading specialist with over twenty years of experience in education. She has taught at the elementary, middle school, high school and university levels, and has worked as a literacy coach in Massachusetts schools. She has experience working with gifted and talented students as well as with students in need of academic support. Additionally, she has had extensive training in current educational methods for reading, writing, study strategies, and differentiated instruction. Margery has been a consultant and monthly contributor to AMBOOKBABY, a customized book club which provides award-winning books, along with literacy and childhood development guidelines, to families of young children in China. In addition to her work with Gateways, Margery has a private tutoring practice in Sharon, MA.

Sarah Kerstein Moreno is an Inclusion Coordinator and Special Education Teacher in Boston, MA. Sarah has worked in inclusive settings for the past decade and has worked for Boston Public Schools as a teacher of students with significant disabilities for the last 4 years. She has been the Inclusion Coordinator at URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech, a full inclusion Jewish science and technology sleepaway camp, since its founding. In addition, Sarah has worked in various capacities in synagogue schools, training teens and teachers to collaboratively support all students in their classrooms. Sarah enjoys working with Education Directors, teachers, and other community members to help them reach their goals and support the needs of all students. Sarah received her undergraduate degree from Tufts University and her graduate degree from Lesley University.

Susan Morrel is a dynamic Jewish educational leader who comes with over 25 years of congregational education experience, as well as work in Jewish camps and organizations. In addition to her coaching and consulting work at Gateways, Susan is the Director of Field Experiences at Hebrew College in Newton Centre and a Jewish Education Consultant in the Greater Boston Area. She is also a teacher-educator in Philosophical Inquiry in Jewish Education who specializes in Social, Emotional and Spiritual Learning. Susan holds an Executive Master’s Degree in Religious Education from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

Linda Myer has worked as a special education teacher, textbook writer/editor, director of an education theater company, Jewish educator and cantorial soloist. Linda earned her Bachelors Degree in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and later completed her graduate work there in Behavioral Disabilities. She taught students with disabilities and diverse learning needs in the Madison Public Schools for 5 years. After moving to Boston, she worked as a freelance textbook editor & writer for Houghton Mifflin, Prentice Hall and Glencoe. During this time, she founded and directed History-Making Productions, a touring theater company performing plays based on history to schools and community groups throughout New England. Linda made a career change into Jewish Education and served as Special Needs Coordinator at Congregation Shaaray Shalom in Hingham for 7 years, and then became the Education Director/Cantorial Soloist at Temple Beth Torah in Holliston. In 2015, Linda earned a Certificate in Jewish Sacred Music at Hebrew College in Newton and has served as b’nei mitzvah tutor and High Holiday cantor at various congregations. Currently Linda is the Education Director at Congregation Agudas Achim in Attleboro. She holds MA-certification in Moderate Special Needs and Social Studies.

Jennifer Newman is a Speech-Language Pathologist and licensed Reading Specialist who believes that all students have the capacity to become proficient and confident readers and writers when they are provided with effective instruction. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from Northwestern University, a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Emerson College, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Reading from the MGH Institute of Health Professions. Over the course of her 30-year career, she has worked in a range of settings with both children and adults. In addition to working for Gateways at the Maimonides School, she served as their K-5 ELA Curriculum Coordinator and Student Support Coordinator, developing curriculum guidelines for reading and writing, coaching teachers in the implementation of evidence-based practices for reading and writing instruction, facilitating the implementation of a Gateways RtI Grant, and overseeing student support services. She is a certified EBLI instructor and coaches teachers in implementing the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) approach for reading and writing.

Yana Pyuro holds a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a concentration in Special Education from Cleveland State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Tel Aviv University in Israel. Additionally, Yana received a PreK-12 English as a Second Language teaching license for Massachusetts in 2018. Yana has worked in the field of education in some capacity since 2009. Whether providing reading, writing, and math support as a Special Education teacher in Washington D.C., teaching native English speakers at the elementary level in Israel, or instructing intermediate English language learners at the junior high and high school level in Israel, Yana has always strived to provide standards and needs-based instruction to her students. Yana’s Special Education background guides much of her approach to lesson planning and interactions with students. Breaking down educational concepts into smaller, more palatable parts is something Yana attempts to do for all students, regardless of the population. In addition to Gateways, Yana is also working as an English as a Second Language teacher at Solomon Schechter Day School of Boston. Yana is excited to get to know students through her work at Gateways and to help them achieve their educational goals.

Rebecca Raub received her BA from Brandeis University in Anthropology and Environmental Studies and her MS in Special Education from Simmons University. Since 2006, she has worked to support students in reading, writing and math in both public and private schools. She enjoys getting to know each of her students and aims to incorporate their strengths and interests into sessions. Rebecca looks forward to working with students at Maimonides this year to reach their academic goals. In her free time, she runs, volunteers as Black Earth’s compost coordinator in Sharon, and spends time with her family.

Amanda Redler-Schouela earned her Bachelor of Science in psychology from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada and earned her Master of Science degree in Speech Pathology from Emerson College in Boston. Amanda has specific interest and expertise working with children ages 0-5. She specializes in pediatric language delays, articulation impairments, play therapy, sensory integration disorders, and social communication disorders. Amanda has planned and led social groups for children and is trained in the More Than Words Hanen Program. Her experiences include working in Early Intervention, private practice and consulting in preschools. Amanda believes it’s important to collaborate with everyone involved in a child’s life in order to see the most carryover of the skills they learn and develop in therapy.

Jodi Saltzman received her Master’s in Science in Speech Language Pathology from Hunter College in 1995. She has worked for Early Intervention programs, preschools, and day schools over the last 21 years in both New York and Boston. Jodi began working at Gateways in 2008. Jodi has provided direct services and consultation to students K-8 and teachers at several Boston-area day schools, including Jewish Community Day School (JCDS), Torah Academy, and Solomon Schechter Day School (SSDS) Boston. Jodi enjoys working with students individually as well as in small groups, both in and out of the classroom, providing speech, language, and social skill support to enhance their development and help facilitate a successful day school experience.

Rachel Schein, Psy.D., is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Rachel’s clinical work focuses primarily on training and empowering professionals who work with youth to provide exemplary, evidence-based services to others. Rachel has been active in the Jewish community since childhood, growing up at a Reform Synagogue in White Plains, NY, and serving as a Youth Director and Inclusion Consultant at several Reform Synagogues in CT and MA. In addition, Rachel has worked as a consulting psychologist and inclusion specialist at several of the URJ summer camps. Rachel joined the Gateways staff in the fall of 2020 as the Program Coordinator for the “Our Daughters, Our Future” mental health series, and is thrilled to continue working with the community in this capacity. In addition to her consulting work, Rachel works full time at a Residential Treatment Center in Central Massachusetts, where she oversees diagnostic and assessment services, provides clinical supervision to interns and staff clinicians, and coordinates clinical training. Rachel also serves as an adjunct faculty member at several different universities. Rachel is passionate about the field of mental health and supporting our communities!

Alison Tarnoff, Speech-Language Pathologist
Ali Tarnoff, MS, CCC-SLP, graduated from Emerson College with a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2016. Since then, Ali has worked in the Early Intervention and private practice settings. She has performed diagnostic evaluations and treated children from birth to 15 years old in areas such as articulation/phonological delays, receptive and expressive language disorders, pragmatic and social skills deficits, and fluency. Ali was happy to join the Gateways team in March 2022 and has had the opportunity to work at Maimonides and SHAS. Ali enjoys working with children both one-on-one and in small groups. She particularly enjoys incorporating play activities into therapy sessions so that students become intrinsically motivated to grow and work towards their goals.
